George Henry Pettis papers, 1861-1865.

Pettis's letters to his wife Annie describe the army posts, towns, and the difficulties of frontier duty in a time of limited communication and erratic pay. Included are the descriptive rolls of the men recruited by Pettis, giving rank, age, size, description, place of birth, occupation, and enlistment date, with, in some cases, notation as to cause of death.

Carleton was born in Lubec, Maine. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1839, during the Aroostook War, and took part in the Mexican–American War. He served in the 1st U.S. Dragoons in the American West, participating as a lieutenant in an 1844 expedition to the Pawnee and the Oto. Lieutenant George H. Pettis, was commander of Company K, 1st Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers. He is also author of several items about his experiences in the army including Personal narratives of the battles of the rebellion : Kit Carson's fight with the Comanche and Kiowa Indians, which was published by the Historical Society of New Mexico in 1908.
